Association info: The International Freeskiers Association (IFSA) was established in 1996 by freeskiing pioneer Shane McConkey. Freeskiing in the 1990s was described as different specifications of the alpine ski sport such as off-piste skiing, slopestyle, half-pipe, big air, and skiercross. McConkey believed that the sports in freeskiing needed an athlete driven governing body unlike FIS is to ski racing. Since then, the sport of freeskiing has grown rapidly and each of the disciplines have evolved into strong individual sports. Today IFSA is centered on junior and adult big mountain freeskiing competitions. In 2011 there were more than 70 big mountain competitions across the globe. By providing a unified professional body, the IFSA enhances the overall image of freeskiing with credible criteria and measurable judging formats and through the use of media, events and public awareness. The IFSA looks to provide athletes international recognition vital to the growth of our sport.
