Rip Curl Hometown Showdown Since its inception in 1896, the Olympic Games have never been postponed. Until now. 2020 was to be surfing’s debut on the world’s biggest sporting stage, but due to Covid-19, the games were postponed one year. We’re taking you inside the lives and minds of the Canadian surfers on hold as they stay mentally and physically prepared for their biggest moment in the sport. The excitement is building as we wait for the Tokyo Games in 2021. Hear from Canada’s best surfers Mathea Olin and Pete Devries, and the rest of the Team, ahead of Surfing’s historic Olympic debut. The countdown is on for the Tokyo Olympics… and Surf Canada needed to find a way to prepare Canada’s Olympic hopefuls amongst the pandemic. The answer comes in the form of The Rip Curl HomeTown ShowDown, an invite only specialty competition, set to return High Performance surfing to Tofino’s coastline. With the Rip Curl Nationals postponed, this marks the first and only competition of the year and features some of Canada’s best talent, ready to be action tested. The unique ‘skins’ format brought local Tofino National Team members competing in a one-day ‘ShowDown’, purposefully designed to stress test the Athletes by adding intentional financial incentives to each heat, which will further simulate the high stakes of National Team Selections, World Championships and Olympic Games. "Everyone involved is really fired-up to compete again!" said Executive Director Dom Domic. "I am so stoked to have our National Team back in the ocean competing and staying On Track to Tokyo”. In addition, this ShowDown format, significantly tests our targeted athletes in all possible heat formats, and our Coaching staff will be able to identify any technical and tactical gaps, for optimal functioning prior to final Olympic Qualifiers in May 2021." Surf Canada worked closely with Nate Laverty and his Film team to capture content and produce a made for broadcast 23 min package that we will be providing to our Commercial and Media partners to share and amplify. Adjusting to the reality that is 2020, competitors and essential staff will be following our strict Safe Return To Sports Guidelines.
