The reigning Big Air world champion Elena Koenz led a Swiss podium sweep at this season's penultimate snowboard freestyle event of the Europa Cup tour. She took home the national title edging off Isabel Derungs and Celia Petrig to second and third. Her young teammate Moritz Thoenen earned the glory as the best ranked rider in the men's competition staged at Corvatsch.
Koenz brought home the gold in a super tight women's decision with a killer second run landing a switch back 180, frontside 360 indie and a back 360 mute whilst throwing down some pretty stylish combos on the rails.
With a score of 89.0 the 28-year-old secured a tiny lead of 0.5 on Derungs who had celebrated a stunning World Cup comeback a few weeks ago after her horrifying crash two years ago which took her out of the competition for a long time.
“I had a lot of fun at Corvatsch,” Koenz said. “I'm very happy to close out the season with a title.”
While the lucky women's winner claimed her title at the Europa Cup in a close duel, 19-year-old Thoenen finished in second position of the final Slopestyle EC contest with 89.7 and therefore only 0.8 behind of Boris Mouton (FRA, 90.5) with Simon Gruber (ITA, 85.5) placing third.
The rider from Hilterfingen landed a switch backside double 900 double stiffy to frontside double 10 mute, back double 10 double grab and stomped a 50-50 cab front 180 shifty to cab 270 to fakie in the rail section to bring home the glory.
Nicolas Huber and Jonas Boesiger rounded out the Swiss nationals podium as second and third, placing fourth and sixth in the EC event, respectively.
The Europa Cup titles went to Emiliano Lauzi (ITA) who finished 11th in the men's event and therefore secured his second career's title.
Sofya Fedorova (RUS), who had won silver (Slopestyle) and gold (Big Air) at the 2016 Junior World Championship, had already clinched the title in her first Europa Cup season weeks ago and therefore was able to sit out the last Slopestyle of this winter, which features one more competition.
The final snowboard event of the 2015-16 season takes place on Saturday, April 23rd, when the Big Air Swiss Nationals as well as the Big Air EC finals take place at Corvatsch.
