The winner of the 23rd annual Tampa AM Dashawn Jordan, at Skatepark of Tampa, Florida, USA. Image credit: / Street League Skateboarding
Jordan’s first run got him a 72.33 because it included a few falls. He found himself in 5th place trailing Frankie Villani, Vincent Milou, Angelo Caro and Jereme Knibbs. In 11th place when his second turn came around, he stepped it up and this run was closer to the one that helped him win the Demis. He was scored an 87.33.
Jordan was bumped out of second place and overtaken by Zion Wright who earned an 88 for his third and final run. So in third place now, Jordan waited his turn watching Midler remain in first, and everyone after him (Caro, Knibbs, Villani, Olson, Eaton, Monteiro, and Milou) fail to beat him as well as Wright and Midler.
At this point, Dashawn took matters into his own hands and tightened up the run he’d been working on all day. He delivered it with the touch of the smoothest technician. His run included textbook demonstrations of the following tricks: 270 lipslide, blunt kick flip to fakie, 360 flip 50-50, 360 flip lipslide and laser flip over the hip. The contest shut down temporarily for everyone to celebrate what they had just seen. And the judges awarded him a score of 92.
The subsequent hype and buzz in the air affected everyone including Yuto Horigome—who had been solid all weekend, but fell several times during his last run. Then came Damn Am of the Year Zach Saraceno, who Jordan had been battling and losing to all year long in the Damn Am contest series. With the camera focused on his face, Dashawn’s lack of emotion made it seem like he believed Saraceno could beat him at this moment. But soon that changed. Saraceno’s run started off shaky and then improved. But he ended up falling, so there was no way he could come close to or catch Dashawn. And that’s when Dashawn Jordan knew he won the 2016 Tampa Am contest.
