COMMUNITY CUP: THE DOCUMENTARY RELEASES ON ITUNES

15 professional female snowboarders gather amongst Summit County locals and industry influencers to celebrate and watch the global release of Community Cup: The Documentary presented by Volvo, hosted by Keystone at the Breckenridge Backstage Theatre December 14th. This candlelight event featured a Prints on Wood photo gallery with images from Scott Clark while sipping Purps (Organic Energy Drink) + Breckenridge Distillery Vodka cocktails through Simply Straws (reusable glass drinking straws) and delicious craft beer from Denver Beer CO.

We don’t want to just take, we want to give in that process,” Founder of cause based event Community Cup and professional snowboarder Chanelle Sladics.

Community Cup: The Documentary captures the vision, creation, and execution of the first ever rider-designed course and zero-waste snowboard competition on the planet. Based on a event where snowboarding, music, community and sustainability is interwoven into one experience; professional snowboarders Chanelle Sladics and four time Olympian Kjersti Buaas set out to elevate and showcase women’s snowboarding at it’s best.

“It’s a huge movement. That’s whats cool about the Community Cup,” Community Cup competitor and USA Olympic Gold Medalist, Jamie Anderson.

The jumps and features are getting bigger and more dangerous each year, often catering towards the men. In response to a survey comparing the top men and women on the World Snowboard Tour, it was clear the high number of injuries seen amongst females could be minimized by course design.  Chanelle and Kjersti invited the riders to help design a slopestyle course to minimize potential speed issues, so the athletes could execute their top maneuvers, in addition to also implementing a new progressive competition format.

“The reason why I chose to participate and co-create this event is because I think it’s important for women’s snowboarding to have a competition where the course is specially designed for them, and the intention is all on the women. I believe we will see the most progression and style out of that” says Co-Founder and  four time Norwegian Olympian Kjersti Buaas.  “If you want a good contest and you want the riders to do well, the riders are gonna do well if they are riding a course that they like and have input on.  The competition format was a true representation of how you were snowboarding that day. That’s laid the foundation for a good competition,” states 2014 Community Cup Winner, Christy Prior. “To see that you can work with weather and have an actual say- that was the best. I just love snowboarding, I don’t care what I do with snowboarding; I am a freestyle snowboarder, you can put any obstacle in front of me and I will try to make the best out of it,” former World Champion and two time Dutch Olympian, Cheryl Maas.  “It was such a rider friendly event. No stress and so much progression,” USA Olympian Ty Walker.

Through in-depth interviews you are invited to travel into the minds of 16 Olympians tackling  dynamic topics like style, creativity, injuries and the art of snowboarding. Accomplishing this daunting task, the documentary portrays all the pieces of this dynamic event and showcases some of the most stylish and progressive riding we have ever seen in competition history. By implementing sustainability in all avenues of event infrastructure, Community Cup hopes to set a new standard for the larger, more established events.

“Putting the style in front of the progression, progressed it more. Now I have to do a sick trick and.... it has to look really, really good,”says USA Olympian Karly Shorr.  “I hope this event will continue in years and years to come because it is so important,” Norwegian Olympian and two time XGames Gold Medalist Silje Norendal.

The premier line-up includes snowboarding legends Kjersti Buaas and Cheryl Maas, Olympians Jamie Anderson, Silje Norendal, Christy Prior, Ty Walker, Jessika Jenson, Karly Shorr, Sarka Pancochova, Stefi Luxton and founder Chanelle Sladics amongst many others.
The goal of this Documentary, was to capture and share the stories of the top women slopestyle competitors with untraditional commentary while showcasing what makes this snowboard competition so different than the rest.
