Reef Heazlewood looked to be on the path to victory throughout, as he enjoyed steady early round performances, achieving a 16.35 heat total (out of 20 possible points), a huge score that topped the contest scoreboard and secured success in the Men’s division. The snappy goofy-footer kept his form for the finals, impressing the crowds and judges with a variety of maneuvers to close the win.

Afterwards Heazlewood said he was stoked to take out the stop and mentioned the good pulse of waves. Saying that it was a fun final, he also acknowledged that his opponent, Kyuss King, had been in great form all contest, and that he’d know it would be a hard fight to beat him.

King surfed strongly throughout the contest and created an electrifying final with Heazlewood for which he should be proud. He fought valiantly to catch and create the 8.85 score needed to steal the title but couldn’t quite find enough. When questioned King reported that it was good to have a heat against Reef, and that he was pleased the result as he had hoped to do well after a poor event at Bells. He leaves the Cronulla stop hoping to get a few more over the coming year.

Macy Callaghan has been having a fantastic 2017 season with wins at the World Junior Championships and in the Qualifying Series Carve Pro. She continued on her winning streak, overcoming opponents with her signature style to claim the Women’s division. The main aim for Callaghan is to qualify for the World Tour, so her focus is now on flourishing in the Qualifying Series. She said it was great to take out the Cronulla but that it hadn’t really sunk in yet.

Bodhi Leigh-Jones surfed well against Callaghan, catching a hefty 13 waves during their 30-minute battle. Despite throwing down a variety of maneuvers and fighting hard she couldn’t find the 7.60 needed to take the lead. Leigh-Jones remained stoked with the result however, smashing her previous best Pro Junior quarterfinal finish. She said it was an amazing feeling to share the final with a World Champion.

The Subway® Pro Junior events are WSL sanctioned and supported by Surfing Australia and Billabong.
