Right from the beginning of the competition, Max Kearney (Tugun, QLD), upheld a progressive form, carrying his momentum right through to his blue ribbon 21 and Under Men’s Pro Am final, with a display of innovate surfing. Wasting no time in the sucky bank at off the wall Duranbah, Max quickly locked in an excellent score of 8.37 (out of a possible 10), backed up with only a 3.50, to best hot favorite Quinn Bruce (Coolangatta, QLD), Elliot Lynch (Coolangatta, QLD), Jed Fasso (Byron Bay, QLD), Finley James (Lennox Head, NSW) and Jaggar Bartholomew (Coolangatta, QLD) in the stacked 6 man final.
Alyssa Lock (Tweed Heads, NSW) used her local knowledge of Duranbah coupled in her game plan during the 21 and Under Girls final and found multiple waves with scoring potential against Piper Harrison (Coolangatta, QLD), Kiani Dobbyn (Palm Beach, QLD), Elle Clayton-Brown (Corlette, NSW), Nyxie Ryan (Lennox Head, NSW) and Paris Knight (Minyama, QLD). In the end, Alyssa’s tactics paid dividends overcoming her fellow counterparts respectively and she earnt herself that all-important first place finish.
Both of the blue ribbon male and female divisions were unmatched by fellow junior surfers in the 16 and Under Junior Boys division with their lightning fast speed and sheer power. Although walking away with a 6th place finish in the 21 and Under Men’s Pro Am division, Jaggar was able to adjust and bounce back in the 16 and Under Junior Men’s final, which kicked off shortly after. Jaggar, no stranger to the right hand break at off the wall Duranbah locked in the highest scoring heat total of all 5 finals, evidently taking out the win against those in the jam packed 6 man final.
If the excitement wasn’t enough for what has already become a highly regarded junior surfing series, those in the 10 and Under Squids final raised the benchmark of talent within their age group surfing slabs that were double overhead for the young juniors. Paddling into waves only the most skillful surfers would take off on, Max Deffenti (Miami, QLD) showed only commitment without hesitation which was all he needed to score himself the win in the squids division and also taking home a brand new Firewire Surfboard thanks to none other then team at Firewire Surfboards.
The next event on Volcom’s Totally Crustaceous Tour (TCT) will be the national final to take place at North Narrabeen in New South Wales on May 21-22 2016, where the top four surfers from each qualifying event will compete. The winners from each division will be crowned here, and in-turn will become eligible to compete at a huge World Final at the famous Lower Trestles break in California next June - with a whopping prize purse of $30,000 USD.
Specifically designed for the best female and male talent to showcase their fresh, freakish and fearless skills in the water, the world-wide series aims to give talented youth the opportunity to gain competition experience and have fun whilst doing so.
