Surfers generally have a pretty good rep for being some of the most ecologically minded people around. Right on guys! Guess the sport is so close to nature that it’s just damn obvious that we gotta care for our world. Thankfully it doesn’t take much to make a few smart choices for the better. If you do, guaranteed you’ll feel immense, so read on for a few impact making thoughts.
Most surfers seem to get it that it’s uber important to take care of our oceans and beaches so we can continue to max out in these awesome playgrounds. Pollution is one of the big probs these days, and we wanna do all we can to prevent horrors like fudge tunnels becoming more common. If this thought scares the hell out of you too, consider joining one of the big name groups such as Surfrider Foundation or Surfers Against Sewage, who’ll campaign, educate and make a difference on your behalf. Already a member? Great going!
There is more we can do as individuals though. The boards most dudes ride are not exactly the best example of a planet friendly product. :s So don’t get too complacent and smug. For those of you really thinking about your impact, there are less toxic choices available, and you can find loads of surf kit options that minimise environmental impact at sites such as The Green Wave eco surf store. Check it out!

Now, there is something going on to help counter the fudge tunnel prob we mentioned. Heard of The Ocean Cleanup yet? It’s a stellar idea dreamed up by a guy in his teens, who was bothered by all the plastic bags and trash floating around during a holiday trip. He believes it’s possible to collect up vast quantities of our plastic waste from our glorious oceans, and it’s something now being pursued and trialled by him and a team of worldwide experts. Seriously, Boyan Slat & his team totally rock! www.theoceancleanup.com/?gclid=CInyz6C5zcUCFQT4wgodblMA3g
For a dead easy ethical kick, you can help Surf Aid (an org helping some of the world’s poorest communities in the most sublime surf spots), just by listening to some tunes. What?! All you gotta do is play the album on Spotify to help donate… So no dosh & barely any time needed! Win win.
If you’re more of an Action Man or gal, then get more hands on. There are heaps of community projects around the world linked to sharing the love of surfing with various groups of people. Consider lending your skills and time. You could make someone’s whole year when they get to experience the rush of surfing. :D Great examples are Surf Action (which helps ex-military in the UK), Life Rolls On (for those with spinal injuries) and Surf Bus Foundation (for city kids from Los Angeles). See our ‘good guys’ section to find out more about these and other great groups.
Most likely you do, but one last thought- respect the marine life too. If you haven’t already seen it, check out this dude going above and beyond to save a beached Great White!
That’s some serious balls there man! Even if it’s not the size of Jaws.
It’s unlikely you’re sat reading this and are gonna have such a mega, committed idea as The Ocean Cleanup hero Boyan (if you do, go for it!). But you can totally make a difference, even in really small ways like picking up trash… or fundraising for your favourite foundation.... or giving up one morning a month to help others… Just do something!! Even if it’s just buying a reusable bottle to avoid excessive use of plastic. Too easy huh?! ?
Our ‘good guys’ section showcases all the fantastic environmental and social projects doing their bit to change the world through surfing. Check them out. Even small contributions of time or dosh add to the whole. Create a few little ripples and you’ll soon be making waves. So, take the plunge and increase your feel good vibes now. :D
