Best Of 2016 - Trickipedia

We’ve said it so many times it’s almost become our mantra: “Trickipedia is not a trick tips section, but that doesn’t mean you’re not going to learn.” But it’s true! We took that thing we all do when we want to learn a trick—replaying video over and over, looking at it from every angle—and just fine-tuned it with some sweet slo-mo so you can appreciate every little detail. Like a coach reviewing a game film, you will learn. And you’ll get better. We guarantee it. Here are our best teachable moments from 2016.

Miles Silvas - Populist 2016

21-year-old Miles Silvas is Mr. Natural. His easy style absorbs not just the impact but everything around him. His part in Adidas’ “Away Days” is a presentation of someone who is extraordinarily gifted. It’s four minutes of the best possible publicity for a skate shoe: he glides along like a drop of mercury; seeing him in action provokes a chemical reaction. Currently finishing up his PUSH part for The Berrics, and recently appearing as an inaugural rider for NUMBERS, Miles has plenty more in store for 2017. This is his second year in Populist, and he endures as someone who is undeniably one of the best today.

Kyle Walker - Populist 2016

After turning Pro last year, Kyle Walker has appeared on the cover of issue 148 and in several of his sponsors’ video projects: REAL’s “Surveillance” series; Volcom’s “Holy Stokes!” Most recently, Kyle anchored Vans’ “No Other Way” with an utterly perfect part. Do you remember how every homie’s phone and laptop swelled with the haunting strains of “Unchained Melody” (AKA the song from “Ghost”)? How the soundtrack fell blessedly silent, leaving only the sound of metal on metal for yards upon yards of untouched rail? Kyle was a Populist contender long before “No Other Way,” and “No Other Way” just sealed the deal.

Justin Figueroa - Populist 2016

In the history of skateboarding, there have always been those individuals who consistently put themselves in harm’s way. Figgy stands out as that guy who takes a licking, keeps on ticking, and then comes back for more abuse. His filming schedule for the Emerica video was drastically shortened due to a freakish rib injury. Rather than heed his doctor’s order to stay off the board, he came back like a punch drunk prize fighter at the count of nine. Figgy’s “MADE” part is a testament to the fighter mentality in all of us; it was easily one of the finest things about 2016.

Dennis Busenitz - Populist 2016

Dennis Busenitz was inescapable this year. Everywhere you turned, there he was: adidas, Spitfire, Volcom, REAL… Dennis skates fast, and it’s partly so he can keep up with his video projects. Having the final part in “Away Days,” a full-length with a cast of dozens, is a huge achievement. And releasing on a milestone anniversary (ten years with adidas Skateboarding) ensured that there was plenty more Busenitz to go around in the form of the documentary “Up To Speed.” Capping 2016 with Spitfire’s “Live Wire”—a love letter to San Francisco—one thing was clear: Dennis couldn’t slow down if he wanted to.

Tiago Lemos - Populist 2016

It’s been another packed year for Jaguariúna, Brazil’s Tiago Lemos: He turned Pro; he had a part in Boulevard’s “Quinto”; he put together one of the greatest, most technically advanced Run & Gun runs ever; and he competed in BATB9. Then, in October, DC released a blistering four-minute ghetto blaster of a part called “Press Play”. Tiago’s level of skating is remarkably consistent, but it is his unthinkable ledge combos and hip-high pop in “Press Play” that left us completely in awe of him. He’s a mystery man with unnatural talent, and 2016 was the year when we discovered what Tiago is capable of.
